Portrait Drawing Course – Ten Sessions
A 10-Session Course to Transform the Way You See and Draw
Learn a clear, classical method for drawing expressive, accurate portraits, even if you’ve never drawn a face before. This course takes you step by step from simple shapes to fully developed charcoal and mixed-media portraits.
Throughout ten focused sessions, you will:
- Build strong foundations fast
Get comfortable with essential drawing materials and learn reliable techniques for proportion, structure, and facial placement. - Start every portrait with confidence
Using simple geometric shapes, you’ll learn to map the head, place features, and establish the five essential darks that give portraits depth and clarity. - Master the 2-value method
You’ll work with light and dark to create clear, accurate portraits before adding complexity, the same approach used in traditional ateliers. - Add values, unify tones, and lift highlights
Step by step, you’ll learn to control shadow edges, edit shapes, add tonal mass, and lift highlights for subtle, luminous effects. - Work from both casts and live models
Apply your skills to real portrait drawing, learning visual measurement, the use of mirrors, and how to observe shapes and values with accuracy. - Explore toned paper and expanded materials
Experiment with charcoal varieties, chalks, and sanguine to expand your value range and bring richness and depth to your drawings. - Create a final composed portrait
In the final sessions, you’ll move beyond the head to include the neck, shoulders, and body, developing a complete, balanced composition.
By the end of the course…
You’ll have a repeatable portrait-drawing process, sharper observational skills, and a portfolio of finished drawings that show real artistic growth.
